Oskarte.n - since 2022

2022-heden

Graduation Show and thesis, Sandberg Institute - 2019

Sean Cornelisse, alumni of finished Temporary Programme Reinventing Daily Life (2016-2018), presented the results of his research in the exhibition, Gepaard met Oranje supported with his thesis; Niet de kunst maar de sukkel die konsT, at Pakhuis Wilhelmina Losdok, from 21-23 June 2019.

He explains how art could play a more prominent role in our daily lives that automatically includes the so called 'absent spectator' without giving in on quality and autonomy. By stating that the municipal cleaning services are in essence artists and vice versa.
With this acknowledgement he contributes to the shift of a new collective art-consciousness.

Research Question:

Within the Master's program 'Reinventing Daily Life' (2016-2018), the research question was: "How can art play a more prominent role in our everyday lives? And in doing so, create the opportunity to engage an untapped audience without compromising autonomy and quality."

To address the research question, the proposition is made to consider everyday life and everything observable within it as art, in harmony with the invisible mechanisms and the interaction of internal and external processes. This perspective suggests that society is characterized by conscious and unconscious artistry.

This study explores how art can shed new light on existing reality and to what extent a new reality can be created, which may have been previously explored. The principles of John Cage's "Art=Life=Work" and Joseph Beuys' notion that "everybody is an artist" and "the society is the most important work of art to be realized" (Beuys, year) are considered. Additionally, Constant's expressions in an interview with Simon Vinkenoog (year) regarding New Babylon, where the city is seen as a collective living space, are examined.

The investigation also draws inspiration from Johan Huizinga's concept of "homo ludens" as a creative being, participating actively in the game (Huizinga, year). Furthermore, the work "Socle du Monde" by Piero Manzoni is explored as an example of elevating humanity to the realm of art (Manzoni, year).

To develop a more concrete application tailored to the research question, a critical examination of the current status quo is conducted. The study aims to formulate a thought system and employ intertextual intervals to progress towards concrete answers and examples.

DRC Badminton Club - since 2020

The Covid-19 crisis has led; in addition to cleaner air in the city, to a scarcer use of public space. We were given time and space to take in this stillness even more fully. As Waarnemer (Observer), Sean Cornelisse took to the streets of The Hague to investigate the extent to which the works of art could also

benefit from this form of concentrated attention. Passers-by on the Grote Marktstraat and the Spui were asked for their opinion on The Sculpture Gallery. Listen to the surprising answers to questions such as 'what would you put on the pedestal yourself?' and 'which sculpture do you remember the most?'. This podcast is mainly in Dutch. 4 out of 19 speakers are English spoken.

Ovisms - 2015

Ovismen: Interaction with machine learning systems as Google Translate.

Ovisms is an experimental project that explores the boundaries of computational language processing and its interaction with machine translation systems, specifically Google Translate. The aim of this experiment was to examine the output generated by feeding the translation system with self-constructed phrases, resulting in nonsensical or incomprehensible translations.

Through deliberate manipulation of syntax, semantics, and linguistic structures, Ovisms aimed to challenge the algorithmic capabilities of Google Translate and investigate the inherent limitations of machine translation. The experiment sought to demonstrate the inherent complexities and nuances of human language, highlighting the gap between automated language processing and human understanding.

The results of Ovisms showcased the algorithmic deficiencies and the inability of machine translation systems to accurately interpret and convey the intended meaning of unconventional or manipulated language constructs. This experiment underscores the importance of human linguistic expertise and the need for caution when relying solely on automated translation technologies for complex or nuanced linguistic tasks.

By shedding light on the limitations of machine translation systems, Ovisms contributes to the ongoing discourse on the boundaries of computational language processing and emphasizes the significance of human interpretation and understanding in linguistic contexts.

Additionally, a map was included that depicted the geographical distribution of the languages found through the Google Translate experiment. By taking the exact midpoint, equidistant lines converged in the Aegean Sea, where an agglutinative language was identified. This geographical representation highlights the linguistic diversity and provides further insights into the influence of language families and their spatial distribution.

Dissident Peace - 2018

‘…ism project space presents an installation by Sean Cornelisse. This exhibition takes place in the head of the editor-in-chief of ‘Courant Dissident’. The editor retrospectively visits the World Peace Congress of 1907 to investigate the questionable refusal of a dissident Korean delegation to the congress. With the installation, Cornelisse shows us his perspective on fake news, the Yi Jun Peace Museum, psycho calligraphy, isolationism and propaganda art. Cornelisse himself is present as curator of the presentation.’
